National School Program
Sunday, September 28 the allied golf associations in Vermont will be holding an informational and complimentary event on The Vermont First Tee National School Program, together with a 9-hole scramble golf outing at the Killington Golf Club.
The focus of The First Tee® National School Program™ is to establish a lifelong interest in golf by engaging young people (K-5) in a structured golf curriculum that promotes personal character development within a physical education setting. The program teaches elementary school children The First Tee Nine Core Values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment, using the game of golf as the platform. Instruction takes place during physical education classes with the children using developmentally appropriate SNAG® (Starting New at Golf) equipment.
Fifteen schools enrolled and received grants to participate in the program in the spring of 2008:
Barnard Elementary Milton Elementary
Bristol Elementary Mountain View Community School (Rutland)
Cavendish Town Elementary Pomfret Elementary
Chester-Andover Elementary Proctor Elementary
East Montpelier Elementary Reading Elementary
Ludlow Elementary Rutland Town School
Lyndon Town Elementary Sherburne Elementary
State Street School (Windsor)
The Vermont First Tee National School Program will cost each newly participating elementary school $662.50. The program costs include developmentally appropriate equipment, State of Vermont-approved physical education curriculum, four-hour physical educator training, and administrative expenses. Where one physical education instructor teaches several schools, the fee is $662.50 for the instructor. This is a one-time fee. The statewide golf associations, along with outside funding sources, subsidize the remaining costs.
The sponsoring statewide golf associations are:
Vermont Golf Association
Vermont Golf Association Scholarship Fund
Vermont Golf Course Superintendent’s Association
Vermont Golf Industry Committee
Vermont PGA
Vermont Seniors Golf Association
Vermont State Women’s Golf Association
Please join us Sunday, September 28, 2008 to learn more and get your school involved. We are inviting all physical education teachers to attend. We hope to have many of those who are currently participating as a thank you for their efforts and to provide information to prospective new participating schools. We also invite our Vermont PGA professionals, physical education teachers, school administrators, and parents and children from schools that are participating or are interested in starting the program for 2009.
