OROWEAT AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO CHAPTER PARTICIPANTS
AT WALMART FIRST TEE OPEN AT PEBBLE BEACH

PEBBLE BEACH, CA – The First Tee Chief Executive Officer Joe Louis Barrow, Jr. today joined Jack Neugebauer of Bimbo Bakeries, parent company of premium bread-maker Oroweat, in announcing the first two recipients of the Oroweat “Healthy Minds” Scholarships.  John Catlin, 17, from The First Tee of Greater Sacramento, and Sara Diaz, 16, from The First Tee of San Antonio, will each receive $8,000 scholarship awards for higher education.  The announcement was made at Pebble Beach Golf Links, site of the fifth-annual Walmart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach presented by Nature Valley.

“The First Tee is grateful to Oroweat and Bimbo Bakeries for supporting The First Tee and helping us make a positive impact on young people,” said Barrow, who also serves as executive vice president of the World Golf Foundation.  “John and Sara are deserving participants of these scholarships.  Through their involvement with The First Tee, they have demonstrated leadership abilities, citizenship and a commitment to continuing education.”

Oroweat selected the scholarship recipients from a group of ten finalists who earned the highest life skills comprehension scores during The First Tee selection process for this year’s tournament, an official Champions Tour event that pairs 78 junior golfers with 78 professionals and 156 amateurs.  One-hundred and twenty-four boys and girls from The First Tee facilities around the world took part in the selection process, which assesses life skills comprehension, playing ability as well as community and school involvement.  The goal is to field a well-rounded group of juniors that excel on and off the golf course.

"We congratulate and recognize the special achievements of John and Sara, and extend the best to all The First Tee participants in their continuing education. The First Tee and Oroweat have an exciting partnership which reinforces our values of health, nutrition and active lifestyles.”
